was at for the past two years and now being able to be home
While he counted the days, Burress was apart from his wife, Tiffany, and their children, Elijah and Giovanna -- who was born while he was away. Holidays, birthdays and celebrations, Burress missed them all for the better part of two years.
"Every day was difficult," Burress said. "But the Thanksgivings and the Christmases and the Easters and different things like that, and even Halloween, just not being able to be there and see the emotions and jubilation on your kids' faces and wife. It hits you a little harder. That's why every day is basically special to me."
Burress, then with the New York Giants, shot himself the night after Thanksgiving on Nov. 28, 2008, when the gun he was carrying in his sweat pants started slipping down his leg and went off as he grabbed it. The next several months were filled with court appearances, shame and embarrassment before he was convicted. He served his sentence in a correctional facility in upstate New York with thoughts of returning to his family -- and football -- getting him through those days.
Burress was released in June. A few weeks later, he was a member of the Jets.
An extra-special Thanksgiving for the Burress family? No doubt about it.
"You're talking about being where I was at for the past two years and now being able to be home," said Burress, who has 30 catches and a team-leading six touchdowns this season. "It's actually the first Thanksgiving I've had off while playing football. When I was in Pittsburgh and even when I was with the Giants, we would go in at 6 or 7 o'clock and be home before noon, so in that regard, it's being able to spend the whole day with the family and really just take it all in."
Burress spent Monday handing out turkeys and hams to people in his hometown of Virginia Beach, and he was back in New York -- cutting short his trip to Virginia -- speaking to kids at a school in Manhattan and donating computers. Thursday, though, was going to be all about family and friends for Burress.
"I'm here this year for the first time in two years, and we're just going to get together and do our thing," he said. "We're all blessed and thankful. I'm just enjoying it and looking forward to frying that turkey and getting after it."
Matt Hasselbeck certainly has felt better than this at certain points in his long career, but he still feels good enough to try and keep the Tennessee Titans in the chase in the AFC South.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to make the most of this opportunity or they could fall further back in the NFC South race.
Proving himself able to start after suffering an arm injury last week, Hasselbeck will try to rally the Titans on Sunday when the Buccaneers try to snap a four-game losing streak.
Trailing division-leading Houston by 1 1/2 games, Tennessee (5-5) lost more ground to the idle Texans and dropped into a pack of four .500 teams in the conference with Sunday's 23-17 loss at Atlanta.
    1:59 pm
we want to start making serious improvements down the stretch
"You see the excitement and the smiles on the guys and that's what we need, what we have to have," said Eagles quarterback Vince Young, who could make his second straight start in place of the injured Michael Vick.
This will be the first meeting since 2007 between the perennial powers who seemed like potential Super Bowl foes when the season started. New England has won the last three meetings, including 24-21 in Super Bowl XXXIX.
Brady has completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 871 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions while going 3-0 versus Philadelphia. He threw for 380 and a score in New England's 31-28 win over the Eagles in 2007.
Brady was an efficient 15 of 27 for 234 yards with TD passes of 52 and 19 yards to Rob Gronkowski in Monday's 34-3 win over the Chiefs. The Patriots totaled 380 yards, including 157 on the ground, but Brady still believes his team can be more potent out of the gate after trailing Kansas City 3-0 in the first quarter.
"We're going to need to play better than we did offensively (Monday) if we want to start making serious improvements down the stretch," Brady said.
Gronkowski continues to play at a high level with 20 receptions for 310 yards and five TDs over the last three games. His 20 touchdowns in 26 career games are the most ever by a tight end in his first two NFL seasons.
Defensively, the Patriots also have made strides in recent weeks.
New England gives up a league-high 404.2 yards per game, but has yielded an average 357.7 over the last three contests. The 334 yards the Patriots allowed to the Chiefs was their second-best defensive effort of the season.
"We have the possibility of being a pretty good defense as long as we play well and get better each week," tackle Vince Wilfork said. "(We) can't get complacent. That's one thing we can't do."
The Patriots are prepared to face Young on Sunday, but would not be surprised if Vick got the call if his two broken ribs have healed sufficiently.
"Both guys have been productive and they have a lot of weapons to utilize," New England coach Bill Belichick said. "They do a good job of getting them the ball."
In his first start for the Eagles, Young was 23 of 36 for 258 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions against the Giants. Young was 15 of 36 for 227 yards with two interceptions and ran for a score in his only previous start versus New England, a 40-23 loss while with Tennessee in 2006.
LeSean McCoy, who ran for 113 yards on 23 carries against the Giants, leads the NFL with 1,019 rushing yards. However, he has never ran for more than 95 yards in nine career games against AFC opponents.
    1:59 pm
reporting the decision to play Sunday would be up to Lewis
The exact term hasn't been used, but the indication is Lewis' status will be a game-time decision because of a toe injury that sidelined him for last week's victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
"I really don't know," Harbaugh told reporters about Lewis' status, according to The Baltimore Sun. "It's not like we've got some secret that we're holding back from anybody on any of these guys. We've got three, four, five guys that are up in the air. Our biggest issue right now is nicks and bumps and bruises."
NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora cited sources in reporting the decision to play Sunday would be up to Lewis.
Lewis released a statement Tuesday saying he would do "everything in my power to get back as fast as I can," and cited progress with the injury. Lewis took part in a limited portion of practice all week and officially was listed Wednesday as questionable to play.
Running back Anthony Allen (thigh) and cornerback Chris Carr (back) also are questionable. Defensive tackle Arthur Jones (concussion) was ruled out.
I like these respectful 49ers fans, as a ravens fan i cant wait for the game tomorrow night and i would really prefer that ray be there, but i dont think that his presence would determine who wins, but it wouldnt hurt to have him either. it'll be a tough game, but i would really like to see the two best linebackers defenses go up against each other in patrick willis vs. ray lewis
Like all other true fans of football, and of the 49ers, all I have EVER seen Ray Lewis exhibit is fire, intensity, genuine love of the game - and ultimate class. I hope he does not set himself back by playing when he should not. But if he can go, Hey - more power to him. Let the Ravens bring their A-Game, we will certainly bring ours - and let the chips fall where they may. Best of health and luck to both squads. Unfortunately for the Ravens, this will not be their turn. Oh well.
Plaxico Burress has big plans all mapped out for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Some deep-fried turkey at home, a couple of visits to a few old teammates for dessert. Most of all, though, the New York Jets wide receiver just wants to be around his family.
Burress was behind bars at this time the last two years, stuck in a prison cell after making a costly mistake.
"Man, it doesn't feel good," Burress said Wednesday. "I mean, knowing that you're away from your family on the holidays."
Burress served 20 months in prison on a gun charge after accidentally shooting himself in the right thigh almost exactly three years ago in a New York nightclub. He went from being a Super Bowl star to a convicted felon with an uncertain future.
    1:58 pm
have a really good plan that I’m fired up about
Star Philadelphia receiver DeSean Jackson hopes to play despite a bruised right foot. So does fellow receiver Jeremy Maclin, who missed last weekend's victory with a shoulder injury.
Tyler Palko was on the practice field Wednesday when he received news that Kansas City had acquired Kyle Orton, but the Chiefs' quarterback of the moment said coach Todd Haley didn't tell him what that meant for the team's future, starting with its game Sunday night against the Steelers.
"He didn’t tell me either way," Palko said, according to the Chiefs website. "He just said that we’re full speed ahead for Pittsburgh. I was in the huddle today calling the plays and we have a really good plan that I’m fired up about."
The day after he completed 24 of 37 passes for 230 yards (but no touchdowns and three interceptions) in a 34-3 loss at New England, Palko was back at the Chiefs practice facility despite arriving in Kansas City at 5 a.m. Oh, and he spent the flight home studying film of his first career start with Haley.
"You’ve got to understand something -- I’ve been the practice squad quarterback, I’ve been the number three, I’ve been the number two, and the starter last week," Palko said. "Whether I was a practice squad guy and had no chance of playing on Sunday or I was the three, the two, or the one, I prepared the same way, with the same intensity, with the same amount of time that I put in and that’s not going to change."
Palko, whose career began as an undrafted rookie in 2007, should be pretty excited about playing the Steelers: He grew up in Pennsylvania, played college ball at Pitt, and was briefly the Steelers’ backup quarterback in 2009.
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had successful surgery Wednesday on his broken right thumb and is out indefinitely, with the Bears still hoping he can return before the regular season ends in six weeks.
Cutler suffered the injury Sunday against the San Diego Chargers while trying to make a tackle on an interception.
Late Wednesday, Cutler tweeted: "Surgery went great. Randy Viola is the best," referring to one of the doctors at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo.
"Jay Cutler had successful surgery earlier today," Bears coach Lovie Smith said Wednesday, according to the Rockford Register Star. "It’s the same timeline that we talked about earlier in the week, and we don’t know any more details right now, but we’ll be able to get that to you a little bit later on."
Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh really doesn't know if 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis can play in Thursday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers. At least that's what he says.
    1:56 pm
would know more following the surgery
New York Giants left tackle Will Beatty is scheduled to have surgery on Thanksgiving to repair a detached retina in his right eye.
The Giants disclosed the injury late Wednesday afternoon, saying in a statement there is no timetable for Beatty's return. He has started all 10 games at left tackle this season.
Beatty, bothered by back spasms last week, was injured during Sunday night's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He developed blurriness in his eye as the week progressed, and the detached retina was diagnosed.
Beatty told Newsday on Wednesday he's "hoping for the best" from the surgery and could miss anywhere between a few weeks and the rest of the season. He told the newspaper he would know more following the surgery.
To deal with the indefinite loss of Beatty, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported the Giants will switch guard David Diehl back to left tackle, according to a league source. Diehl played the position for four years before moving over to guard this season to get Beatty on the field. Backup Kevin Boothe can play every position on the line, and he usually takes over whenever someone is hurt.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback John Skelton led his struggling club to its first win streak this season while filling in for an injured Kevin Kolb. A miserable performance from Skelton, however, helped bring that run to an end last week.
If Kolb is unavailable again, Skelton will likely get the chance to bounce back while helping the Cardinals top the St. Louis Rams for the second time this month Sunday.
Skelton was elevated to the starting role when Kolb developed turf toe in his right foot following Arizona's loss Oct. 30 in Baltimore. The second-year quarterback from Fordham made his initial appearance in place of Kolb on Nov. 6 against St. Louis and threw the tying touchdown pass with 4:51 left in the fourth quarter.
Patrick Peterson ended the Cardinals' lengthy skid by with a 99-yard punt return in overtime. Following that 19-13 win, Skelton had a career-high 315 yards and three TD passes in a 21-17 victory at Philadelphia, Kolb's former team.
Skelton, though, couldn't keep that momentum going last week in San Francisco, where he went 6 of 19 for 99 yards and was benched following a third interception late in the third quarter. Arizona (3-7) turned the ball over a season-worst five times in the 23-7 defeat.
"John played like a rookie," coach Ken Whisenhunt told the team's website. "He's a young football player, and he's going to have his ups and downs."
Despite Skelton's struggles, Whisenhunt said he will start again should Kolb's status remain unchanged. Kolb went through a substantial practice for the first time since his injury Wednesday.
    1:56 pm
overcome some of the mistakes that we're doing to ourselves
"We don't want to put him at risk. You know how valuable he is to our team and our franchise," Frazier said. "So we'll monitor where he is and try to make a good decision with what's best for him and what's best for our team as well."
If Peterson can't play, this likely means more carries for second-year running back Toby Gerhart and more pressure on rookie quarterback Christian Ponder.
Gerhart has only carried the ball 24 times -- four fewer than wide receiver Percy Harvin -- for 118 yards. It will likely be tough for Gerhart to find much space against the Falcons, who are second in the NFL against the run, allowing an average of 85.4 yards. They limited three-time Pro Bowl running back Chris Johnson to a season-low 13 yards on 12 attempts last week.
With Peterson sidelined for much of last week's game, Ponder was given more responsibility. He threw two touchdowns, but also had three costly interceptions for the Vikings, who committed a season-high five turnovers.
"We're not good enough to overcome some of the mistakes that we're doing to ourselves," Frazier said. "So we need to figure that out, or we'll be doing what we're doing right now, talking about a loss."
The Vikings, 3-10 on the road since the start of last season, also need to figure out a way to slow down Turner, who enters the week ranked fifth in the NFL with 888 rushing yards.
The two-time Pro Bowl running back is averaging 105.6 yards over his last five games, while Minnesota is allowing an average of 125.0 rushing yards in its last five.
In the last meeting between these teams in 2008, Turner rushed for 70 yards and a TD on 19 carries in Atlanta's 24-17 victory. Ryan, who is 23-4 in regular-season games at home, passed for 134 yards and a touchdown.
It has been 15 years since the Cowboys last reached the Super Bowl, an empty stretch that seems to have humbled owner Jerry Jones.
Now Jones looks at his team and sees how its 2011 season can go two ways, starting with its annual Thanksgiving Day home game. The Cowboys (6-4) can beat the Dolphins (3-7), extend their winning streak to four games and move into sole possession of first place in the NFC East. Or they can stumble, lose the momentum they've gained and end up facing the same old questions about if they have the right quarterback, the right coach, even the right owner in place to foster long-term success.
"And that's why we have to look at the opportunity we've got out here Thanksgiving Day," Jones said Wednesday on KRLD-FM, according to The Dallas Morning News. "And we've got to make sure that we look at it like we're playing in a Super Bowl because these windows of opportunity for these teams to get a chance to compete in the playoffs and get to a Super Bowl, in the league and the system we're in, are precious."
Jones knows that firsthand, considering his team's shortcomings in recent years. He sees the need to realize and react to the moment.

sacked five times during a 24-7 loss to Seattle
"We've go to get better at making sure (Skelton) won't struggle," the Arizona coach said.
Another matchup with the Rams (2-8) might help the Cardinals and Skelton, who was 20 of 35 for 222 yards in the previous meeting. Arizona has won nine of 10 matchups and is seeking its seventh consecutive win at the Edward Jones Dome.
The Cardinals forced Sam Bradford to throw a career-worst three interceptions in their 17-13 win in St. Louis last season, and the Rams' young quarterback enters this game following his own miserable performance.
Bradford fumbled twice, was picked off once and sacked five times during a 24-7 loss to Seattle. The Rams were limited to 185 yards, their second-lowest total this season, and Steven Jackson was held to 42 yards on 15 carries after topping 125 in three consecutive games.
"I'm beyond frustrated right now," Bradford said. "I've never been on a team that has been in this situation. I don't like it. I hope this is the only time in my career that I'm ever in a situation like this."
Jackson might fare a little better against the Cardinals, who won't have starting nose tackle Dan Williams for the rest of the season because of a broken left arm. The Rams running back has averaged 107.3 yards over his last four matchups with Arizona but has scored only two touchdowns.
One of those TDs, however, came in a 19-6 victory at Arizona on Dec. 5.
Jackson, though, won't have starting tackle Rodger Saffold to help open holes. He's on injured reserve after undergoing surgery for an ailing pectoral muscle, and fellow starting tackle Jason Smith's status remains unknown because of a concussion.
The Rams used practice squad call-up Kevin Hughes in last week's game after replacement tackle Mark LeVoir also hurt his pectoral muscle. LeVoir is expected to miss at least the next two games.
"Timing is really important on offense and we haven't had a lot of that with the same 11 guys. You have to fight through that," coach Steve Spagnuolo said.
The Cardinals are also dealing with a potential injury on their offensive line. Whisenhunt said right tackle Brandon Keith has a concussion and will be evaluated throughout the week to see if he can play Sunday.
Denver coach John Fox decided to turn the offense over to Tim Tebow seven weeks ago against the San Diego Chargers, and the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback nearly led the Broncos back during a frantic fourth-quarter rally.

going to do in the offseason until we get there
"When you look at Tim, you know he has all the intangibles," Elway said. "For any quarterback to really succeed in this league, you have to be consistent throwing the football and you have to be consistently on target. Those are the things that we know and Tim knows. He'll continue to get better this season, but a lot of the work will come in the offseason. When you're getting ready and prepared for an upcoming game, it's difficult to spend time on the technique work because you're spending so much mental time with the game plan. The work we're going to have to see is going to be coming in the offseason."
Asked about how Tebow's need to use the offseason to improve would affect the Broncos' plans for next year and beyond, Elway remained non-commital.
"We'll have to play that when we get there," he said. "It's hard to say as we sit here right now what's going to happen. Once we get him into the offseason, we'll go through the evaluations. Who knows where we'll be drafting. There are a lot of unknown variables right now to where we can't really say what we're going to do in the offseason until we get there."
This poor kid is under a microscope and has performed admirably when it mattered. Could you imagine everyone critiquing your every move at work? I think the kid has handled it with class and integrity. Give him a chance to develop through next season and then make a decision. Sounds like that's what the Broncos are going to do. Love watching Tebow so I hope it all works out for him. I'm rooting for him.
While the New England Patriots appear in good position to win their third consecutive AFC East title, the Philadelphia Eagles hope they've begun a push to simply make the playoffs.
In a matchup that might have seemed like a potential Super Bowl preview at the beginning of the season, the visiting Patriots look for a third consecutive victory Sunday against an Eagles' team trying to knock off its second straight division leader.
After dropping consecutive games to Pittsburgh and the New York Giants, New England (7-3) rebounded by blowing out the Jets and Kansas City by a combined 71-19 score. That two-game run has helped the Patriots build a two-game division lead over the Jets and Buffalo.
Though its lead might seem safe considering New England's final six games are against teams without a winning record, quarterback Tom Brady is far from satisfied.
"We're 7-3. I don't think we're really where we hoped to be at this point," said Brady, who has thrown five touchdowns and no interceptions over the last two games.
Philadelphia (4-6), meanwhile, would be thrilled sitting where the Patriots find themselves. Though the underachieving Eagles' immediate goal should be to reach .500, their 17-10 road upset of the New York Giants last Sunday left them two games behind the NFC East-leading Giants and Dallas.

opportunity for us to get on the right track and try to go on a roll
Despite its recent struggles, New York is not about to panic considering it was 4-6 at this time last season before it finished the regular season by winning five of six and ultimately reached the AFC championship game for the second straight year.
The Jets also face one team currently with a winning record - New York Giants - in the final six games.
"In this game, you don't have time to feel sorry for yourself," linebacker Bart Scott said. "You have to move on, and you have to get ready to play. "This is a good opportunity for us to get on the right track and try to go on a roll, because we have to. We can't afford to lose any more games."
In order to prevent that from happening, quarterback Mark Sanchez needs to improve his play from the last two games. He's thrown for 2,333 yards and 14 touchdowns, but 10 interceptions -- two of which have been returned for touchdowns in last two losses.
Sanchez was 20 of 28 for 230 yards with a TD and an interception at Buffalo earlier this month.
The Jets expect to have running back Shonn Greene available after he injured his ribs at Denver. Greene has just one 100-yard game and two TDs this season but has averaged 4.8 yards per carry in his last three games versus Buffalo.
New York's 83 total yards on the ground against the Broncos snapped a streak of four straight games with at least 100 rushing yards.
If John Elway hasn't made his feelings on Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow clear, he's doing his best to try.
After saying Monday that he didn't feel any closer to already knowing he had his quarterback of the future and then clarfiying Tuesday that Tebow will be judged on a full season's worth of work, the Broncos' executive vice president of football operations once again took to the airwaves to give a State of the Tebow address.
Elway said Wednesday on KOA-AM that he's rooting for Tebow but has no way of knowing if the quarterback is right for the team.
"It would be absolutely wonderful for the Denver Broncos and Denver Broncos fans if Tim Tebow could become that franchise guy," Elway said. "I wish I had that crystal ball to be able to say that he absolutely is or -- I don't want to say he's not because I don't believe that. But it's hard to say if Tim Tebow is absolutely that guy. We're very hopeful that he is."
Elway praised Tebow for accumulating a 4-1 record as a starter but noted he would have to improve as a passer.

walking around the team's practice field
Manning hasn't practiced with his teammates much since January's playoff loss to the New York Jets. He worked out with some Colts players during the NFL lockout before scaling things back after having May neck surgery to repair a damaged nerve that caused weakness in his throwing arm. Just about everyone, including Manning, believed the quarterback would be ready by training camp, but he needed another procedure just three days before the season opener at Houston.
Since then, Manning has been seen briskly walking around the team's practice fields, teammates have said he attends meetings and provides advice, and Polian has told listeners that the quarterback has gradually "ramped up" his activity. On Oct. 6, Manning told reporters he'd finally been cleared to stand on the sideline, a major sign of progress because he could take an inadvertent hit.
Hardesty, who missed his rookie season following knee surgery and was starting because Peyton Hillis is injured, was hurt on Cleveland's second series. Hardesty was making his second consecutive start because Hillis missed his second game with a strained hamstring. Shurmur said Hillis, whose season has been a disaster with his ongoing contract situation and injuries, did some light running and is day to day.
Shurmur said Hardesty has a "moderate tear of a medial gastrocnemius" muscle, the large muscle at the back of his lower leg.
"Any doctors in here?" Shurmur joked, attempting to lighten the mood during his news conference.
The Browns (3-4) will bring in running backs for tryouts Tuesday at the team's training facility, Shurmur said. Currently, Chris Ogbonnaya is the only healthy back on the team's 53-man roster. Ogbonnaya has been with the team for less than two weeks, signed off the Houston Texans' practice squad Oct. 18.
Ogbonnaya was pressed into duty Sunday and ran for 37 yards on 11 carries and caught five passes. If he had been hurt, fullback Owen Marecic was Cleveland's only available option at tailback.
Notes: Nickel back Dimitri Patterson is awaiting results of an MRI taken on his injured left knee. Patterson, who was injured during the third quarter Sunday, said his knee felt stiff, but he's confident it's not seriously injured. "It looked worse than it was," he said. ... Shurmur said starting LB Chris Gocong sustained a neck stinger. He missed the entire preseason with a similar injury. ... Shurmur had high praise for his defense, which limited the 49ers to less than 100 yards in the second half.
Jones suffered a hamstring injury during the Bengals' 34-12 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. It was his first game back from a neck injury.

tenure of Browns president Mike Holmgren
And this weekend should be a good barometer: It's the first time Buffalo's gone up there as a contender.
"Our view on this weekend is that it's an NFL game, and we want all of them to be incredibly successful," he said. "That we have two teams that are off to good starts has excited the fans, and that's reflected in the acceleration of ticket sales. The excitement in the press is heightened, and we're seeing the things we wanted to see early on. Toronto is a great market."
How soon it, or London, becomes an NFL market remains to be seen. (NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell told me in London last week that, "We're going to play multiple games over here, and if that's successful, there is a possibility of a franchise here. … Eventually you want to see if we can sell it by focusing on maybe one or two or two or three teams, so we can get to the point where we could have a franchise here."
For as much as we all made about the arrival of Mike Holmgren in Cleveland and the gradual implementation of the West Coast offense -- his mentor Bill Walsh's offense -- the commitment early in the tenure of Browns president Mike Holmgren has been on the other side of the ball.
As Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer noted the other day, Holmgren and GM Tom Heckert have had four top-40 picks in their first two drafts. And all of them have been spent on defense. Last year, corner Joe Haden and safety T.J. Ward came on board. This year, it was defensive tackle Phil Taylor and defensive end Jabaal Sheard.
Seems to be working. The Browns rank fourth in total defense -- interestingly enough, behind AFC North rivals Baltimore, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh -- and it's in no small part due to Heckert and Holmgren's Core 4.
"They're really hard-working guys," Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron, who was charged with leading Cleveland's switch from Rob Ryan's 3-4 to his own 4-3. "They continue to play hard, and we've got a long ways to go, we can better, but they're learning. In this game, everyone's good enough to beat you. You gotta be really sound, tough and talented, and get lucky at times. A number of those things occurred on Sunday."
That led to a near shutout -- the Browns beat the Seahawks 6-3 -- and Cleveland's other two wins also came with the defense holding the opposition under 20 points.
But where this story really started was in camp. One of the more startling things I encountered on the trail this summer was seeing Taylor and Sheard running with the first team very early in the summer.

    giving them the advantage
Kolb has been sacked 24 times in seven games. The pressure he faced Sunday was his most severe yet. Of course, since it was Baltimore, that shouldn't be surprising.
"They run a tough scheme and bring them from a lot of different places. You've got to step up in there and block them," Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "We have to get the ball out quicker in some situations. We had opportunities to make them pay yesterday a couple of times, but we weren't as efficient as we needed to be from a protection standpoint or from getting the ball out. That's always tough.
"When you add in the noise, knowing your guys are going to be late off the ball, giving them the advantage, it is really a tough situation. I don't think people appreciate how difficult that is. That's why they're a good defense, and they're a tough team to play there."
These guys might not exactly be carrying a lunch pail to the stadium, but they did bring a blue-collar, working-man approach to the weekend's games. Take a look at all the nominees, then vote on your choice for the Hardest-Working Man for Week 8.
In facing his former team for the first time, Boldin made the Cardinals reconsider just what they might be missing when they let the veteran receiver go to Baltimore. He made a profound impact as the Ravens pulled off the biggest second-half rally in team history for a 30-27 win, finishing with seven catches for 145 yards. More importantly, however, were two key plays that weren't catches but resulted in pass interference calls that became touchdowns a play later. Down 24-6 in the third quarter, Boldin drew a pass interference that put the ball at the 1-yard line to set up a Ray Rice touchdown. The second pass interference call -- another that put the ball at the 1-yard line for an easy Rice scoring run -- helped the Ravens climb to within 24-20 at the end of the third quarter.
Cleveland Browns running back Montario Hardesty has a torn calf muscle and is expected to miss some games, so the team plans to work out possible replacements Tuesday, according to a league source.
The source said Thomas Clayton will be one of the running backs who works out for the Browns. He spent time in Cleveland last season.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Monday that Hardesty is wearing a protective boot, but he doesn't know how long the running back will be sidelined. Normal starter Peyton Hillis also is ailing, having missed two games with a hamstring problem.
Chris Ogbonnaya had 11 carries in Sunday's 20-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but he has been with the Browns for just two weeks after being signed off the Houston Texans' practice squad. Brandon Jackson suffered a season-ending toe injury during the preseason.

34-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles
"There's no rhyme or reason to it right now. If there was, I'd let you know," Munchak said. "We're just trying to get something fixed that hasn't been as productive as we'd like, and we're not doing anything different ... We don't feel any different about Chris Johnson. All of the above. Nothing's changing. Our philosophy hasn't changed."
Notes: Munchak said he expects TE Craig Stevens (ribs) to practice Wednesday after being deactivated against the Colts to help put his injury behind him. ... LB Colin McCarthy (hamstring) also might practice after missing two games. ... Safety Chris Hope (left forearm) is the only Titan not expected to be available for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
There was plenty of blame to go around after the Dallas Cowboys' 34-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, but coach Jason Garrett refused to point fingers at anyone, including defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, the next day.
Ryan told The Dallas Morning News after Sunday night's game that the loss was "all on me." But Garrett said Monday that the Cowboys' performance wasn't the fault of only one person.
"We need to do our jobs better to not have games like that," Garrett said.
The screening of the Eagles game tape merely underscored to players and coaches that the Cowboys simply were overwhelmed by a division rival coming off a bye week that badly needed a victory to climb back into the NFC East race.
"I don't think they did anything on offense or defense that surprised us," Garrett said. "We've seen a lot of the stuff they've done and were prepared for it. Unfortunately, we didn't execute as well as we needed to."
The Cowboys also are dealing with injuries to linebacker Sean Lee (left wrist), punter Mat McBriar (left foot) and cornerback Mike Jenkins (right hamstring).
Jenkins told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he will likely sit out at least three weeks. Lee is unsure whether he'll play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks but will wear a cast if he does. McBriar is scheduled to see a specialist.
Bill Polian plans to keep Peyton Manning on the Colts' active roster all season, even if it means he'll only be back to practice.
While the Colts' vice chairman isn't completely ruling out a late cameo appearance by the four-time NFL MVP this season, he hopes Manning will be able to throw at the team's complex before the season ends.
"I think it's important for him to feel like, 'Hey I'm back, I can do the things that are necessary to say I can play like I want to,' " Polian said Monday night on his weekly radio show. "The bottom line is he needs to feel good about being back and doing the things he wants to do."
    12:26 am
    There's another reason for keeping
But with the Colts 0-8 and the playoffs seemingly out of reach, there's only one big reason to push Manning to practice -- finding out how close Indianapolis' franchise quarterback is to 100 percent.
"That is much more important to us because we know he's not going to play six or seven more years," Polian said, reiterating that Manning is nearing the end of his career and again pointing out the quarterback needs to feel he still can play at a high level.
But it's unlikely the Colts would play Manning in meaningless December games when they haven't played him much in previous Decembers, after the Colts traditionally clinch their playoff seed. There's another reason for keeping him on the bench this year, too.
"I'm not sure we would necessarily play him in ballgames with our offensive line as beaten up as it is right now," Polian said.
The Colts already was trying to rebuild their line this season after using a first-round draft pick on tackle Anthony Castonzo and a second-round selection on tackle Ben Ijalana. But injuries have forced Indianapolis to replace three opening-day starters along the line and move a fourth to another position.
It has been said that one of the reasons Andrew Luck passed on entering the draft last year was because he didn't want to be on the Panthers. That may be a rumor who knows? Anyways he may want to play right away plus he might not want to be on a team he feels may stink for a while. Sure he could learn from the best in Peyton Manning if the Colts got him but he might look at how the Colts have drafted (ignoring defense) and built there team around Manning in past seasons and possibly demand a trade. It seems to me that Luck is not all about the money or he would have entered the draft last year so that tells me he wants to join a team he feels will be a winner in a fairly short period of time. It seems to me and a lot of other people that the Colts have a much bigger need than a qb now. They need at least a competent defense to keep their games somewhat close. They could easily take Luck and trade him for several picks this year and possibly the first pick next year to basically rebuild their defense.
Montario Hardesty tore a calf muscle during Sunday's 20-10 loss at San Francisco, leaving Cleveland with only one healthy running back on its current roster. Coach Pat Shurmur said Hardesty will be out an indefinite period.
"It will be games," said Shurmur, who added that Hardesty is wearing a protective boot. "It will take him a little time to heal up from this injury. I can't tell you how many (games)."
    12:26 am
Dolphins hadn't commented on the test results
If Jones plays this Sunday, he would face the team that drafted him. He established himself as a dynamic returner with the Titans, returning four punts for touchdowns in two years. He was suspended by the NFL for the 2007 season for off-the-field troubles, then was traded to the Dallas Cowboys.
A person familiar with Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey's status told The Associated Press that medical tests show no damage to the rookie's neck, and he might be able to return to practice this week.
The person spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity Monday because the Dolphins hadn't commented on the test results.
Pouncey left Sunday's game against the New York Giants during the second half with a neck injury after taking a blow to the head. Pouncey said he briefly couldn't feel his legs, but that he felt fine after the game.
With Pouncey out, the Dolphins gave up four sacks in the fourth quarter, blew a late lead and lost to fall to 0-7. They next play Sunday at Kansas City.
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb had his right foot in a walking boot Monday to protect a turf toe injury and said he had "no idea" if he'd be able to play in this Sunday's home game against the St. Louis Rams.
Kolb was injured early in Sunday's 30-27 loss at Baltimore, but he stayed in the game.
"I did some things to help with the pain a little bit," he said, "then just tried to gut it out and try to come up with a victory."
If Kolb can't go, second-year pro John Skelton probably would start at quarterback for Arizona. Skelton started four games late last season.
A turf toe occurs when the toe is jammed severely, stretching the ligaments. Kolb said he has had the injury before but not "near this severe."
Kolb said his initial plans are to work to reduce the swelling and pain, "then as the week goes on, give it more and more movement and see what my body allows me to do."
Kolb, who ran for a first down late in the game, said the injury didn't affect his mobility so much as it did the velocity of his passes, since he pushes off with his right foot.
"A lot of your power comes from that side of your foot," Kolb said, "on that leg. When I had to take off and run, I didn't feel it or anything. It probably was just nagging a little bit but nothing to throw me off my game."
Consecutive games against two of the best defenses in the NFL, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, has left Arizona's offense a bit battered. Rookie Anthony Sherman, the team's only fullback, has turf toe on his left foot. Running back Beanie Wells is playing with a sore knee.

need to be ready because you never know
It was Carroll's goal to use only Whitehurst and give Jackson an extra week of rest, but by early in the second quarter it was clear Whitehurst wasn't the answer. Jackson went on to throw for a career-high 323 yards in just 2 1/2 quarters.
"I told him I was going to try to keep him out if I could, 'But you need to be ready because you never know.' And he was right on it and so we went ahead and went with him," Carroll said. "When he went in the game, I told Charlie, 'Charlie, be ready. You may have to go right back. He may not be able to handle it. We'll have to wait and see.' So that's where that all sat. We were very clear on it."
Carroll said he's going into this week with the idea that Jackson will be his starter in Dallas and that fixing Seattle's run game is a top priority. The Seahawks were held to 61 yards rushing and Lynch managed just 24 yards on 16 carries.
Even though he expressed his frustration visibly on the field, Lynch put much of the blame on himself afterward.
"I just felt the first half was kind of my fault that the offense didn't get going the way it should have. There were a couple plays out there where I feel myself, I didn't execute right, and I think those were plays that would have put the game in a different perspective," Lynch said. "Just got to man up and say 'I didn't execute the way that I should have executed on those plays.' I kind of felt like I put us in a hole."
The Buffalo Bills could get a boost in their passing game this week with the return of wide receiver Donald Jones.
Jones missed the Bills' last two games with a sprained ankle but is expected to return to practice this week.
“I’ll definitely get the green light to practice Wednesday,” Jones told the team's website. “I’ll be limited, but we’re going to make a go of it.”
Bills starting left tackle Demetrius Bell is in jeopardy of missing his fourth straight game because of a right shoulder injury that isn't healing as quickly as expected.
Coach Chan Gailey provided the update Monday, stopping short of ruling out Bell from playing Sunday, when the Bills host the New York Jets. Gailey said injured backup left tackle Chris Hairston has a better shot at returning than Bell.
Hairston has missed one game with a right ankle injury.
Starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams (left foot) has already been ruled out for a third straight game.
Buffalo is coming off a 23-0 win over Washington at Toronto on Sunday.
